What Makes a Great Trivia Host?

A Know Brainer Trivia host smiling and talking with a team at their table.

Holding the mic, not the spotlight

Let’s be honest — the person behind the mic can make or break a trivia night.

Some hosts treat it like open mic night at a Fringe Festival. Others run it like military boot camp, barking out questions with the warmth of a fax machine...and then there are the ones who come armed with awkwards games, costumes, and an alarming amount of props.

And look – no shade. If that’s your thing, great. There’s a trivia night for everyone, and those nights have their loyal fans.

But at Know Brainer Trivia, we do things a little differently.

We make it about you and your mates

Our hosting style is grounded in one big idea: the night should feel like it’s yours.

Our hosts aren’t there to show off or steal the spotlight – they’re there to guide the night, keep it running smoothly, and create a fun, relaxed atmosphere where you and your team can laugh, debate, and shout over each other about what year Titanic came out.

We want people walking away saying:

“That was so much fun – let’s do it again next week.”

Not:

“I’m still not sure why we were asked to do a dance-off for a bonus point.”

No main character vibes

A Know Brainer host knows how to:

  • Set the vibe without making it weird

  • Keep things moving without rushing

  • Read the room (and not make it all about themselves)

  • And most importantly – make sure you and your mates have a cracking night out

You won’t find us doing improv between rounds or asking you to act out a movie scene for a bonus point. We’re not auditioning for a game show. We’re there to keep the questions coming, the scores ticking over, and the good times rolling – without becoming the centre of attention. Think less “main character energy” – more “solid supporting actor who makes the film better.” A great host is the Samwise to Frodo. The Ron to Harry. The Phil Dunphy of pub trivia.

No gimmicks, just good trivia

Some trivia nights come with novelty challenges, wacky stunts, or bonus rounds that require interpretive dance. And hey, more power to them – but that’s not our jam.

We believe the fun should come from:

  • Great questions

  • Good company

  • And the natural chaos of competitive pub trivia

Our hosts respect the room and the reason you're there – to hang out, test your brains, and maybe, finally, beat that smug team from table six.

Come along and see

At a Know Brainer Trivia night, here’s what you can expect:

  • A confident, friendly host who runs a tight ship — without trying to steal the show

  • Smart, well-paced questions that spark laughs, debates, and the occasional passionate whisper-argument

  • A night that’s truly about you and your team — not the person holding the mic

It’s the way we think trivia should be — smooth, social, and centred around the people who came to play.

And it’s exactly why teams come back, week after week.
